The Creative Programmer: ADHD, AI, and the Inversion of Advantage

Core Thesis

AI-assisted programming (Claude Code, Copilot, ChatGPT) inverts the traditional developer advantage hierarchy. The cognitive profile that was historically a disadvantage in software development — ADHD, particularly the inattentive type — becomes a natural advantage in the age of AI-assisted coding.

Traditional “expert programmers” who invested years memorizing syntax, APIs, and patterns now face:

  • Commoditization of their core asset (technical knowledge)
  • Identity threat (“If AI can code, what am I?”)
  • Workflow rigidity (can’t adapt to AI collaboration)
  • Convergent thinking bias (one right path vs. exploring many)

ADHD programmers, meanwhile, bring:

  • Divergent thinking (natural prompt engineering)
  • Comfort with not knowing (never memorized it all anyway)
  • Pre-existing external scaffolding habits (AI is just another tool)
  • Big-picture / problem-finding orientation (WHAT and WHY over HOW)
  • Iterative mindset (trial and error is their default)
  • Hyperfocus (deep sustained engagement when interested)

The Killer Data Point

Experienced developers get 19% slower with AI in familiar codebases (METR 2025 RCT). Neurodiverse workers are 25% more satisfied with AI assistants (UK Dept. for Business and Trade). These two findings, taken together, suggest the advantage inversion is not just theoretical — it is measurable.
